Happy birthday to Krispy Kreme. The now-world-famous company sold its first doughnuts in Winston-Salem on July 13, 1937. Founder Vernon Carver Rudolph and his partner used their last $25 to rent a building across from Salem Academy and College, the chain says on its online timeline, so they had little money left. They convinced a nearby grocer to lend him ingredients in return for payment once the first doughnuts were sold.
