The Asheville Police Department warned the community Tuesday that it suspects a dangerous batch of fentanyl could be circulating in the area.

In 48 hours from Jan. 14 to Jan. 16, officers in the western North Carolina city responded to five overdose deaths, the department reported.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be up to 100 times more potent than morphine.
