TAYLORSVILLE – Alexander County Sheriff's Office arrested a woman after receiving a 911 call Tuesday morning to report a 4-day-old male infant being found unresponsive.
First responders pronounced the child dead at the scene.
Aishia Marie Pacheco, 22, of Taylorsville, was charged with the second-degree murder of her son.
Alexander County Sheriff Chris Bowman said the child had bruising to his mouth and nose.
"It's tough… Tough on the first responders, tough on investigators," said Bowman, visibly shaken.
Bowman said Pacheco told deputies she had smothered the child because he was crying.
Pacheco appeared in Alexander County District Court on Wednesday morning before Judge Edward L. Hedric IV. She applied for a court-appointed attorney, and Hedric assigned attorney Joel Harbinson to represent her.
While the latest charges may be the most shocking of Pacheco's crimes, she has had more than one run in with law enforcement.
She has served time behind bars since 2010 when she was convicted of second-degree arson after setting fire to her neighbor's trailer. In 2013, she was convicted of misdemeanor breaking and entering, and she spent time in jail for the same crime in 2014. Pacheco was just released from custody on Jan. 25, 2015, according to information from the N.C. Department of Public Safety.
