Two App State players win Sun Belt weekly awards

BOONE — Based on their performances in a 17-7 road win against Louisiana last Wednesday, Appalachian State linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither and quarterback Zac Thomas swept the Sun Belt Conference defensive and offensive player of the week awards Monday.

Davis-Gaither posted 11 tackles including two and a half for loss with a half-sack as the Mountaineers' defense held Louisiana 37 points below its season scoring average. Thomas accounted for 210 yards of offense and had two 7-yard touchdown runs, including one on a bootleg keeper around left end to seal the win with 1:55 remaining.

The Sun Belt on Monday also announced that App State’s road game at South Alabama on Oct. 26 will air at noon on ESPNU.

One of the biggest strengths of the Lenoir-Rhyne football team a year ago was its offensive line, and with the pieces the Bears have coming back, the same could soon be said of the 2020 season. Ian Brinson was the squad’s starting right tackle last year, while Blake Jefferson held down the center position for most of the season and Kurtis Feanny and Bryce Heidinger also started double-digit games on the offensive line.
