The Iredell County Board of Commissioners met for a full agenda on Tuesday, Oct. 20, addressing a range of community initiatives, from major economic development incentives and strategic planning to law enforcement bonuses, school capital project updates, and county property sales.

Economic development incentive: Project Avatar

During the meeting, commissioners held a public hearing regarding an economic development incentive grant for "Project Avatar," identified as an expansion for Mooresville-based defense contractor Corvid Technologies. The company plans a 400,000-square-foot manufacturing expansion investing up to $98 million in capital improvements and creating a minimum of 170 new high-paying jobs (with the potential for up to 423) with an average annual wage of $81,550, while retaining 394 existing employees. Following public comments regarding wage metrics, the board unanimously approved an economic development grant not to exceed $3,187,100 over a 10-year period based on performance requirements.

Strategic planning work session

Commissioners met with representatives from the Centralina Regional Council for a work session on updating the county’s five-year strategic plan. During the discussion, board members emphasized preference to the current mission and vision’s references to efficient, cost-effective public service delivery while maintaining the county's status as a premier place to live, work, and raise a family. In setting strategic goal framework priorities, spanning economic development, education, public health, public safety and justice, and general government, commissioners stressed balanced growth (ensuring commercial and industrial tax bases outpace residential development), competitive workforce compensation, and advocating against state tier system policies that penalize successful counties. Centralina will continue working with county staff and leadership on the next phases of the plan.

Public hearing: County personnel ordinance revisions

The board opened a public hearing to consider proposed updates to the Iredell County Personnel Ordinance. County leadership presented minor clarifying revisions regarding elected official exemptions (sheriff and register of deeds), overtime calculation guidelines, and aligning county holiday schedules with the state of North Carolina for Christmas. Commissioners voted to continue the public hearing to the Nov. 17 meeting to allow additional time for county staff and department directors to review the draft changes.
