At a local elementary school in Pasquotank County, a room full of eager first graders recently picked up their pencils to take EFNEP's entry survey, marking the start of an exciting new learning journey. Led by Lynnell Godfrey, youth EFNEP educator, the initial assessment tested the students' ability to identify healthy snacks, fruits, vegetables and dairy foods, as well as recognize physical activity and proper hand hygiene habits.
Before diving into the education series, administering this entry survey helps Lynnell gauge what these young learners already know. By understanding what students recognize on day one, she can tailor her instruction to meet the students where they are.
Over the next six weeks, these young learners will participate in the Show Me Nutrition: Fun with Food and Fitness curriculum. Designed specifically for first grade students, this interactive program will focus on one food group each week while also covering important food safety practices and physical activity.
At the conclusion of the series, the students will complete the same survey to measure what they have learned during the classes. The ultimate goal is for every child in the room to confidently answer all of the questions correctly. Empowering youth with nutrition education today creates a healthier, stronger community for tomorrow.
