SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2026 season to Coker 3-1 at Frock Field Wednesday night and will now shift its focus towards postseason play.

Catawba (12-1-2, 8-1-1 SAC) outshot the Cobras 10-7, but Coker (7-5-1, 5-4-1 SAC) put four attempts on goal to Catawba's three. Corner kicks were 2-0 in favor of the hosts. A total of 35 fouls were recorded; Coker received five yellow cards, while Catawba was given one in the physical match.

The first half was a defensive battle, with Catawba attempting three total shots, two from Diogo Correia and one from Gabriel Miranda, none of which came on goal. Coker attempted the game's first shot on target in the 44th minute, but Héctor Vara was there to make the save.

The back lines continued to dominate until the 67th minute, when the Cobras capitalized off a Catawba foul inside the box and scored the match's first goal off a penalty kick.

Alex Payton looked to answer less than three minutes later, firing a shot on goal, but the Coker keeper delivered his first save of the night.

Catawba continued to apply the pressure as João Magalhães produced the equalizer, scoring off a feed from Luis Rodrigues, tying the game at one apiece in the 71st minute.

The Cobras, however, took back the momentum after finding the back of the net in the 77th minute, retaking a 2-1 advantage.

The Catawba Indians looked to even the score, being awarded a free kick after a Cobras foul. Correia uncorked an attempt on goal, but a diving save was made once again by the Coker keeper to maintain the lead.

Coker added insurance in the 88th minute, scoring on a breakaway to seal the 3-1 upset victory, handing Catawba just its first loss of the season.

The Catawba Indians finish as the South Atlantic Conference regular-season runners-up and will host the opening round of the conference tournament at 8 p.m. Saturday, October 31, at Frock Field against seventh-seed Mars Hill.
