The heat is expected to be intense on Friday into the weekend, so it is important to prepare and stay safe. In Winston-Salem, temperatures are projected to exceed 90 degrees, with high humidity levels.
Extended exposure to heat and humidity can lead to serious health issues, especially for those working outdoors or without access to climate-controlled facilities. Two common conditions to be aware of are heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Winston-Salem Transit Authority fare-free service
With heat indices expected to exceed 100 degrees according to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) will provide fare-free fixed-route bus service between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to help residents access local cooling centers and escape the heat.

Recreation & Parks pool operations during extreme heat
In response to forecasted hot temperatures and an elevated heat index, the City of Winston-Salem Recreation & Parks Department will implement its Extreme Heat Protocol at all municipal pools from July 1 to July 5 based on a predicted heat index of over 100 degrees.
To ensure the safety of both guests and staff, as well as to allow for adequate rest breaks for lifeguards and other personnel, fifteen-minute pool breaks will occur at the top of the hour, and pools will close from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. During the pool closure, all customers will need to vacate the pools.
No fee is required for re-entry to the pools.
Reynolds Park Pool is closed the week of June 29 due to maintenance.
Concessions are provided at Waterworks, Bolton and Long Creek (credit cards or cash), and water fountains are located here as well as at the rest of the pools.
Due to high demand, Waterworks often reaches capacity during peak hours. To avoid delays or being turned away, we encourage you to visit one of our other pool facilities.
Additionally, splash pads are also available throughout the city for relief from the heat.
Recreation & Parks appreciates the community’s understanding and cooperation as we prioritize safety during extreme weather. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and visit one of the city’s open pool locations to cool off safely.
For more information about pool hours, splash pads and locations, please visit the City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks website at Pools & Aquatics | City of Winston-Salem, NC or contact City Link for more information at 336-727-8000.
