The Iredell County Board of Commissioners met for a full agenda on Tuesday, Oct. 6, addressing a range of local initiatives — from educational facility upgrades and land conservation efforts to countywide property reappraisal preparation and fire service delivery updates.
Athletic facilities and school funding
During the pre-agenda meeting, commissioners reviewed a request from Iredell-Statesville Schools for $3 million in state lottery funds. The funding will go toward stadium upgrades at South Iredell High School, including a new turf field, track system, upgraded LED lighting, and safety improvements to a retaining wall and bleacher accessibility. Board members took time to discuss county funding mechanisms, emphasizing ongoing collaboration with local school leadership to navigate state and federal mandates while supporting capital needs. The budget amendment was unanimously approved.

Preserving Iredell’s natural spaces
Commissioners heard a presentation regarding a collaborative conservation effort in the Rocky River corridor. Working alongside the Davidson Lands Conservancy, plans were presented to pursue a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to acquire 220 acres (125.7 acres within Iredell County) to establish the proposed Harry and Mildred Hart Nature Preserve. The project aims to permanently conserve natural habitats, provide public trail access, and potentially house a nature education facility. The board voiced support for pursuing grant opportunities to advance the project while evaluating future long-term maintenance needs, unanimously approving the grant application 5-0.
Public hearing: Property reappraisal schedule of values
County Tax Assessor Andy Alexander presented the proposed schedule of values (covering both market value and present use value) to be utilized for the upcoming 2027 property reappraisal. The presentation outlined updates to base rates, minor adjustments to depreciation schedules, and the inclusion of new building categories — such as barndominiums, data centers, and storage garage condos — to ensure fair and accurate valuations across the county. Residents had the opportunity during the public hearing portion to voice their concerns. Commissioners noted that regular reappraisals are required under North Carolina state law to keep property values aligned with actual market trends. The board voted 5-0 to adopt the uniform schedules of values.
Fire department district realignments
The board revisited ongoing discussions from its September 15 workshop regarding response times, efficiency, serviceability, and cost across the county's 18 fire departments. Commissioners evaluated expanding response areas contracted with Statesville and Mooresville under "Option A," re-evaluating coverage provided by five out-of-county departments and beginning redistricting negotiations with the parameters of the four-quadrant framework for future consideration. The board voted 5-0 to authorize staff to move forward with initiating the redistricting process, applying Option A parameters for municipal coverage and district realignment to optimize service delivery.
