Connected by compassion: The stories behind the family ties that strengthen CVHS

Meet Lori and Kim Bowman: A shared passion for caring
For Lori Bowman, introducing Kim to Catawba Valley Health System was easy. After more than three decades at CVHS, Lori knew firsthand the supportive culture, opportunities for growth and sense of purpose that make the organization a special place to work.
“I have been here for 34 years, and once I met Kim and realized her compassion for caring and helping others, I knew she would fit in well at Catawba as part of the team,” Lori shared.

At the time, Kim was working at another local hospital. Lori often shared how much she enjoyed her career at CVHS and encouraged Kim to consider becoming part of the team.
“Lori had already been here for over 20 years when I came to work here,” Kim said. “She would always brag about how wonderful it was here. She finally talked me into putting in an application.”
After interviewing with Janet Travison, Kim knew she had found a place where she belonged.
“I absolutely loved Janet and everything about CVHS,” Kim recalled.
Kim joined Catawba Valley Health System in 2016, beginning her career on the Internal Resource Team (IRT). During her time at CVHS, she continued to grow professionally and expand her skills, eventually transitioning to the Birthing Center. There, she joined a specialized training program to serve in the Cesarean section operating room as a surgical technologist and first assist.
“That program has really been an amazing learning experience for her,” Lori shared.
For both Lori and Kim, working at Catawba Valley Health System means being part of something bigger than themselves. They share a commitment to providing compassionate care and creating positive experiences for every patient and family they serve.
“Working at the hospital caring for the same people in a sense—same patient, same goal, same vision—keeps me wanting to strive to be the best for our patients, going above and beyond,” Kim said.
Their dedication to the CVHS mission extends beyond their daily roles. Lori serves on the Employee Giving Council, where she enjoys seeing the impact of the Catawba Valley Medical Center Foundation and the grants provided to support important needs throughout the organization.
“I love seeing all the amazing gifts that the Foundation is able to provide grants for as the various needs arise,” Lori said. “Giving back to the hospital through the Foundation has always been important to us both.”
Together, Lori and Kim have built careers rooted in compassion, service and a desire to make a difference. Their shared appreciation for CVHS has strengthened not only their professional journeys but also their connection to the organization’s mission.
“We both truly are caring people and appreciate the opportunities that Catawba has brought to our lives,” Lori shared.
The Bowman family’s story reminds us that compassion has a way of spreading. When employees find a place where they feel supported, valued and inspired, they naturally want to share that experience with the people they care about.
